Ray theory radiation patterns of point sources situated at structural interfaces

Petr Jilek & Vlastislav Cerveny

Summary

Ray theoretical expressions for radiation patterns of point sources situated at structural interfaces were derived in Cerveny (1994) and in Jilek and Cerveny (1995). The derivation was based on the summation of direct and reflected, P and S waves, and on the summation of transmitted, P and S waves. Individual elementary waves were treated by zero-order approximation of the ray method.

To extend the applicability of the derived expressions to point sources situated on boundaries of thin transition layers and to point sources situated in a close vicinity of structural interfaces, the hybrid ray-reflectivity method was used.

In this report, numerical examples of radiation patterns of P and S waves generated by point sources situated on structural interfaces, close to structural interfaces and on the boundaries of thin transition layers are presented and discussed. Vertical, horizontal and inclined single force point sources and an explosive point source are considered.
